Steve Gardiner splashes through icy meltwater on the first crossing of the Moore Glacier in North Peary Land, Greenland



Steve Gardiner, an English and journalism teacher for the past 30 years, currently teaches at Billings Senior High School, Billings, Montana. He has coached the cross country team the past ten years.

The author of four books and over 500 articles in newspapers and magazines, Gardiner is a strong proponent of promoting student literacy through Sustained Silent Reading, publishing student writings, and teacher modeling of literacy skills.

Gardiner is a veteran of numerous mountain climbing expeditions to Greenland, Africa, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Alaska, Switzerland and Tibet and has run in hundreds of races including master's track meets, road races, trail runs, the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon.

As a speaker, Gardiner has recounted his expeditions and read excerpts from his books for thousands of students and adults in classrooms, community meetings, and convention speeches.

Since 1991, he has worked on three committees with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and in 2002, he received National Board Certification.
